A message from President Stephen Lee

Certainly hope you all managed to do your homework and know to whom the parting thought from last week can be attributed:
 
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.  The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
 
Whilst the language may be in need of some update, the intent remains clear and as relevant to our time as it did when first spoken.  As Rotarians we are offered the opportunity to dare greatly.  To come together positively to effect better outcomes.  Daring greatly is not a call for each of us to have super powers, but rather that we step forward in spite of our insecurities, to develop, try, challenge, stretch and ultimately to give of our best.  We are ordinary people capable of achieving extraordinary things when we Dare Greatly.
 
Please continue to keep Vic Hall and his family in your thoughts and prayers.  The embodiment of a person who has spent his life daring greatly and achieving such extraordinary things.  Vic has been in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and is due to move over to Hollywood shortly.  Unfortunately he is unable to take visitors outside of family, but I encourage you to please send your wishes via Geoff Simpson who will pass them on to Vic’s Daughter-In-Law.

What's noteworthy  - Breakfast meeting 5th August 2020

Club Announcements: 
  • John Holman reminded everyone of past member Enda Fry who he recently ran into
  • SwapMeet this past week raised a great $373.40 and thanks to those who volunteered their time. Tony spoke at length about his visit to the Kalamunda Markets where he and Stephen enjoyed some time together and got some great tips on how our SwapMeet can potentially be improved in the future. 
  • Reminder to everyone in the Club, if you are interested in helping support Tony in his role overseeing SwapMeet, or if you have any ideas or suggestions, please reach out to him directly. 
Fines:
The Eagles supporters didn't get away without a fine this week and Tony Delich was lucky to receive the virtual wine tax for the day.  
 
Arthur didn't disappoint in being later and the Sergeant actually fined himself for moving into the 21st century and purchasing an iPhone. 
 
Two minutes with Guy Mattioli 
 
Guy took us on a short tow minutes history trip across a few countries, learning about his family origins.
 
Both sets of grandparents were originally from Vasto in Italy. His grandfather on his fathers side travelled to New York, Argentina and Brazil and ended up in Sau Paulo as one of 10 children. 
 
On his mother's side their family also originated from Vasto, Italy and  travelled to Brazil where she met Guy's grandfather and they were married.
 
In 1974 they came to Perth and started their new life as Australians.
 
As big as this world is, its ironic that that both sets of grandparents originating from the same place in Italy met on the opposite side of the world!

Nathan Blockley is completing his Marathon on Saturday this week.  They are approximately $800 short of their fundraising target for Mental Health.  If you have been thinking about making your donation, please do so over the next couple of days.

How delightful to hear from Grace Buchanan last Thursday about advanced care planning.
 
Although these are hard conversations to have and to hear, we know that by sharing this essential information with our loved ones, we make it so much easier for them when times are tough.
 
it is important that your preferences are understood to improve your end of life care and to improve your family satisfaction. It also goes a long way to reduce stress, anxiety and depression for your relatives and those staff who take care of you during. 

Grace provided us with a few fabulous links of key documents that you REALLY have in place, including:
  • an up to date will 
  • an enduring power of attorney
  • an enduring power of guardianship
  • an advanced health directive 
  • and an advanced care plan
