Our weekly Zoom meetings go from strength to strength with lots of discussion between members and information shared.
Lat week we heard from Angus Buchanan who gave up date on Curtin University and their 47000 students. They have done an amazing job moving on line in 4 weeks. Angus noted the infrastructure coping well and believes that the uni will most likely now maintain some online education in his department.
John Tick Gave an interesting talk on bee keeping. His interest in bees started as a teen where he grew up in the blue mountains where they had an orchard one of his early sports was wood chopping and they discovered that the undercut left behind attracted swarms. As he grew up he didn’t do anymore with bees until about 5 years ago. John now has 7 hives and we look forward to a presentation in time as to how he manages his bees and their honey production.
Zoom meeting attendees on Thursday 16 April 2020
On Thursday 23rd we had a great meeting with 24 attendees and an ANZAC theme thanks to Seargant John Holman. Traditionally we would host an ANZAC service breakfast to honour those who fought for us and our freedom. Given the current social distancing limitations, it was wonderful to still recognise those heroes.
This week we also saw member Ralph Martin join us from Sydney and provide us with a brief on what research his team are involved in. Byron Kakulas also provided a run down on his cousin Dr Patricia Kailis’s life.
Steve Wilton has been along for 3 meetings in a row, which is just wonderful to see. Most members had the opportunity to speak this week and we already look forward to next week.
Bits and bobs about the members of the Club - a little bit about Pat Emery
Pat Emery was born in South Perth no 7 April 1937 and was the eldest son of a railway officer. He went to primary school in the WA Wheatbelt, to Geraldton High and then did a Tertiary Diploma of Financial Planning at Deacon University in 1990.
Pat joined the bank of NSW in Geraldton in 1953 and was transferred to the head administration in to Bank of NSW in 1955. In 157 he did his 3 months national service in the arm. Pat was transferred to Fifi on a 2 year term in 1960 to the Suva office to work at the capital city bank. Pat then went on to be transferred to a number of posts with the bank both in Australia, Sydney and to Mt Hagen and Port Moresby in PNG.
In 1991 Pat became a member of Rotary Club of West Perth after previously being a member of both Mundaring and Wyalkatchum Rotary Clubs. Pat served as treasurer for 4 years, secretary for 3 years and programs coordinator for 15.

1999 - Recipient Rotary Paul Harris Fellow-upgraded to sapphire pin

In 2013 Pat received Order of Australia Medal "For Services to Medical Profession and Charitable Organisations.
On retirement Pat still enjoys participating in the many charitable institutions in which he remains involved. He also loved his gardening, previously on his half acre hills residence, and now a small patch in Inglewood.

Over the past few decades, the world has made tremendous progress toward ensuring that people everywhere receive the vaccines they need to live healthy and productive lives. In 2018, 86% of children around the world received life-saving vaccines.
While these gains are impressive, too many people, especially children, continue to miss out, leaving them at risk of dangerous diseases like measles, polio and meningitis.
COVID-19 is sobering proof of how in today’s highly interconnected world, disease outbreaks anywhere can be a threat everywhere. When we don’t have the protective shield of immunisation, it leaves many of us at risk.
In countries with weaker health systems, such outbreaks can have an even more devastating impact – both within and beyond national borders. Strengthening health systems has never been more important.
Rotary knows firsthand that #VaccinesWork. Since 1985, Rotary contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children from polio. When children receive the polio vaccine, their pinkie fingers are marked with purple ink so health workers will know which children received the vaccine. Today, only two countries continue to report cases of polio caused by the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan.

SCRUB CAPS FOR NURSES AND OTHER HEALTH CARE WORKERS
You may have seen an interview with Lisa Cooke on Channel 7 a couple of nights ago. Lisa was talking about a Perth-based project, "Get Scrubbed - Scrub Hats and Linen Bags for HCW," a project designed to make scrub caps and linen bags for nurses and other health care workers in WA.
AG Jane O'Leary Judy Dinnison are administrators of this group and it was agreed that they would co-ordinate requests from hospitals in WA. RC of Western Endeavour was successful in obtaining a Dick Smith Compassionate Grant of $8000 through RAWCS to assist with this.
Since then, the "Get Scrubbed - Scrub Hats and Linen Bags for HCW" group established and it was agreed it would be a good use of our resources if the two Perth groups collaborated, something Rotary is good at. It will also save hospital administrators being contacted by more than one group. The group has already sewn over 500 caps for Royal Perth Hospital.
