The Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play space - an update

A low key “after party” at the AAPS last week marked the practical completion of the last major item – the accessible toilet block. the afternoon saw many of the key players, with Rotary project champions Angus Buchanan from West Perth Rotary and Cheryl Jennings from Subiaco Rotary. Also present were representatives from Nedlands Council, Inclusion WA, Australia’s Bridge, Matilda Bay Rotary and the local community.

All played key roles in the project, which took several years from inception to completion. Nedlands donated “The best  Playground site in Australia”  - Beaton Park on the Dalkeith foreshore  - and paid for the design by renowned landscape architect Fiona Robbe plus committed to ongoing maintenance. Rotary was responsible for fundraising approximately $4m, which included significant pro bono donations of design drawings and materials.

The AAPS has become very popular and it is wonderful to see that this park has won state and national awards since it was opened to the public in June last year.

Breakfast Meeting Thursday 19 September  - Mr Paul Carter, President RASWA
Look forward to seeing all members at breakfast on Thursday to hear all about the Royal Agricultural Society of WA president, Paul Carter.  Paul was appointed to the RASWA Council in 1994, at just 31 years of age, making him the youngest councillor in the society’s long history.

Paul’s focus throughout his presidency has been on utilising the Perth Royal Show and the Claremont Showground as platforms for instilling an understanding and enthusiasm for agriculture and rural life in metropolitan WA – especially with young people. He has also focused on growing the Perth Royal Food Awards concept to establish a mark of excellence which celebrates the very best of WA food, drink and produce.

Paul lives in Perth with his wife Leanne with whom he has three children. His interests including hockey, boating and fishing. He also collects wine and is a keen traveller.
