Guest Speaker

Our Guest Speaker this week was Hayden Brown, a teacher and aspiring author.

Although not Ukrainian, Hayden is inspired by Ukrainian and Slavic culture. He is writing a fantasy trilogy called "The Hideous Crown". It is based on Ukraine with an Empire to the East.

Hayden has also established VR4Good (Virtual Reality for Good), a not for profit social enterprise. Through this he plans to give a voice to Ukraine's children by letting them tell their stories using immersive storytelling through virtual reality technology.

Hayden is looking for help with this venture in the form of guidance, connections with Ukrainian partners on the ground, sponsorship and support with fundraising.

Mykola Mowczan, a Past President of the Ukrainian Association of WA, gave his perspective of the impact of the war in Ukraine. Mykola has visited Ukraine; he is fluent in the language of that country and to a lesser extent of Russia. Mykola endorsed Hayden's project.

Hayden was thanked on behalf of the Club by Bernie Foley

2 Minute Noodle
Please remember that 2 minute Noodles are meant to be 2 minutes, not 10 minutes, it is important for the flow of the meeting that they are no longer than 4 minutes maximum please.

Noodles by Neil Hancock
Neil informed us on several current points of interest with new technology such as Microsoft's new touch screen lap top and the issues being experienced with the hinge on the new foldable iPhone.

President Tony introduced the following announcements:
  1. Kym MacCormac reminded members about the Club Dinner to be held at CU29 on Friday 13th November. Details regarding the event are provided in the attached flyer.
  2. John Van Vliet reminded us that Geoff Hick is coordinating the purchase of Rotary Christmas Cakes through the RC of Dalkeith. The cakes will cost $25 each and can be ordered by contacting Geoff Hick; orders need to be in soon.
  3. Geoff Simpson reported that 7 members from the Club attended the End Polio Now Dinner at the Royal Perth Golf Club last Friday. Nobel Laureate, Barry Marshall, was the guest speaker and Geoff had the honouring of presenting him with a Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
  4. President Tony told us that our Rotary Community Group, Swan 2 Sea, is supporting a project to improve tree habitats for black cockatoos.  It involves encouraging both public and private land owners to set aside areas of land for the planting of trees to create mini-forest habitats for the cockatoos.
  5. Bernie Foley spoke on Hamilton Senior High School. He noted that the school was also involved with the black cockatoo project. Bernie went on to say that he had attended the School's graduation ceremony and  presented the Stan Perron Award to Brooke Andrews.  This prestigious award recognises students across the State who embody the values of Stan Perron: hard work, strong ethics and values, and excellence in academics, sport and community service. Recipients reflect the principles of Rotary's Four Way Test for things we think, say and do.
