Guest Speaker

Our Guest Speaker this week was Dr Alan Briggs speaking on Geoparks WA. Alan is the Director of Natural Heritage and Executive Chair of Geoparks WA.

Geoparks are unified areas that include significant geological features. They include geo-tours and Geo-trails. They are driven by local communities; local stakeholders are encouraged to contribute; there is engagement at all levels of education and they recognise 200 years of early exploration. Geoparks WA supports proposals, facilitates marketing, encourages stakeholders and encourages local interests. There are 241 Global Geoparks. Geoparks/Geo-regions are proposed for the Wheatbelt, Port Kennedy - Rottnest, Margaret River & Capes, Perongorups and the Murchison. Others under consideration are Bremmer Bay, Esperance, Nannup and Waroona. Genestreaming of sculptures is also an action that is adding to Geoparks.

Alan Briggs was thanked on behalf of the Club by Tony Delich

2 Minute Noodle
Please remember that 2 minute Noodles are meant to be 2 minutes, not 10 minutes, it is important for the flow of the meeting that they are no longer than 4 minutes maximum please.

This week Bernie Foley informed us on the development over many years of Wheel Chair Basketball. Bernie's involvement extends well back to the early amateur days and he noted the 1979 WA Sports Association. Today it is a National sport, the wheel chairs are far more sophisticated and the range of disabilities that can be included in the sport (beyond the original paraplegic category) has grown. To allow for the differences in disabilities, points of 1 to 4 are allocated to each participant and each side is only allowed a total of 14 points on the court at any one time. The sport is now played professionally overseas.
