Breakfast Meeting update - Thursday 21st November  -  Peg Davies, Waste Education Officer, Mindarie Regional Council

Peg Davies sure knows a thing or two about waste management and recycling! She gave us all a quick rundown on the best way to recycling and get rid of our waste correctly. But more to the point, we should all consider how much waste we are creating!

Peg works with the Mindarie Regional Council, WA's largest waste management authority to make sure Perth's northern metro community, minimise the impact of waste on the environment.

Peg spoke about the three waste facilities - Neerabup Resource Recovery centre for composting, Tamala Park Landfill and the Recycling Centre at Balcatta.

Each year, the Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup converts some 100,000 tonnes of organic household waste into about 30,000 tonnes of market-quality soil compost to boost the quality of our nutrient-deficient soils. But to get our compost right, we really need to make sure we put our waste in the correct bins.

Here are a few Steps You Can Take:
  • Think about what you can do to minimise waste
  • Make sure your recycling waste is clean and in the correct bin - NO DIRTY COFFEE CUPS IN RECYCLING
  • Take your soft and noisy plastics to the Coles and Woollies drop off bins
  • Only put household waste into your green-lidded household wheelie bin
  • Keep all household hazardous waste (HHW) products out of your wheelie bin and dispose of them appropriately - collection points around Perth
  • Keep recycle waste out of landfill
  • Contact your local council to find out what to do with any other products.

And here is the guide of how to dispose of your waste

An update  - the Claremont Men's Shed

John Holman provided a good little update on the status of the Men's Shed at breakfast last Thursday morning. John noted that the official opening of the Shed will be undertaken by the Premier on the 27th February 2020. Currently membership is sitting at 140 and The Shed has been approved for Lotterywest funding. It is hoped the venue will be fully functional by Christmas.

John was awarded a certificate of thanks by the Men's Shed at a recent meeting. Congratulations John, we are all super proud of the work you are doing with this group.

We look forward to seeing a number of fellow Rotarians attend the official on the day. John will provide details closer to the time.
