The Rotary Club of
West Perth

Breakfast update - Thursday 19 August 2019 - some GREAT news
Geoff Simpson reported that he had heard from the Chair of the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee, Mike McGovern that it has officially been three years since since the last child was paralysed with polio in Nigeria.  This is a massive global win.

Thanks to the amazing efforts of the World Health Organisation, Rotary International, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation there are now only two countries left in the world  to eradicate polio for good. (Pakistan and Afghanistan)
Thanks Kerry, we're feeling decluttered already!
What a truly insightful presentation last Thursday morning by the super organised de-clutter queen Kerry Pond. To think that 80% of what we own we don't actually use is quite confronting. And then to hear that the average person throws away 32kgs of clothing per year... and all the while it can be harmful to our health and our relationships.

It's so true that so much of what we collect, and becomes "clutter" has personal meaning to us, but it might be easier to get rid of those things that don't truly mean something to us if we follow Kerry's rules of:
  • Choose people and relationships over things
  • Clothes are for wearing
  • Books are for reading
  • Toys are for playing
Thanks for all your great tips and tricks Kerry, perhaps we might need to get you back in a few months to check up on us all.

Congratulations to our Rotary legends
On Tuesday last week Rotarian Pat Emery and Honorary Rotarian Prof Byron Kakulas were recognised by The Perron Institute of Translational Science for their 40-plus years of service to the Neuromuscular Foundation (NMF).

Both gentlemen have dedicated years of service to this great cause very close to the heart of the Rotary Club of West Perth. It was wonderful to see their time and efforts acknowledged and rewarded.

Watch this movie and contribute to ending polio!

On Friday 20th September at the screening for Ride like a Girl, for every ticket sold $9.50 will be donated on our Club's behalf to the End Polio Campaign.

So rally your friends and family to watch this great movie about jockey and athlete extraordinaire, Michelle Payne and her dreams to ride and win the Melbourne Cup.

Showgrounds Community Men's Shed update

Having Sgt John Holman as an active committee member is a great way for our Club to keep up to date on the progress of this great initiative.

The Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed Inc. received seed capital from supporting Rotary Clubs. A formal lease was agreed in March 2019 for a twenty-year period at a nominal annual rental.

The Steering Committee, established in 2017 from nominees from Rotary Clubs of Dalkeith, Nedlands, Crawley, Western Endevour, West Perth and Matilda Bay have now completed their duties.

Following a meeting with 140 men in attendance, a new Committee has been formed to take over the governance and management. And Sgt John will stay on as an ongoing committee member.

Thanks for your all your input and efforts Sgt John, you represent us proudly.
