The Rotary Club of
West Perth

Our weekly connection through Zoom

We continue to meet weekly via Zoom and its great to see on average we have 22 - 25 attendees each week.  Over the past few weeks we have seen presentations from Members including Ralph Martins on Alzheimers research, Jon Tick on keeping his bees,  and Nathan Blockey on his research into muscular dystrophy and the diaphragm.

We have also heard from RYLA candidate Georgia Whisson and this last week we heard a super interesting perspective on the COVID-19 situation in the USA from fellow Rotarian James Hunt PDG from District 6600.

It has also been wonderful seeing some new faces in our meetings and having others join us from around the globe. Below in the newsletter is a database that you can link to that will share all the online Rotary meetings globally. Be sure to have a look.

Look forward to seeing everyone this week as we hear an update from President elect Stephen Lee and the incoming Board Members.

(For more info see https://vimeo.com/83632496 ).

Geoff joined Rotary in July 1993 and one of the key reasons Geoff belongs to Rotary is that he wanted to help the community and get out the office to meet like-minded people. Geoff is a past president of RCWA in 1999-2000 and again in 2018-2019. His family have hosted 14 exchange students over the year since 2000 and he believes this is one of the most rewarding projects of Rotary.

A message from VoiceworksPLUS - A West Perth Rotary supported project

I hope you and your families are and have been well over the last few months with the Corona restrictions. It has certainly been a time of change.

For our VWPLUS participants and their family it has perhaps been more so, as members of this group often have other health issues making them more vulnerable to falling ill with Covid-19. Fortunately they are all well although it has not been easy for them to change their usual routines and adjust to social distancing and isolation.

I am pleased to be able to report that we have been able to retain all but one of our VWPLUS participants over this period. In order to keep them actively involved, a lot of work had to go on behind the scenes. One of the first things we put in place was to provide them with a list of phone numbers of their VWPLUS friends and to encourage them to call one another. Through weekly contact with every one of them, we made a record of the calls they made and developed a "Phone Chart" showing contact between different members of the group (see attached example).

In the meantime, we worked hard to get all of them online with Zoom. This has been quite a challenge for them and for their parents but, with perseverance, we managed and have now successfully held VWPLUS Zoom sessions over the past 4 weeks. Singing is still a big part of our sessions and, by providing videos of the choreography, we are still able to perform, albeit virtually.

A new addition to our weekly rehearsal is "Storytelling". Maggie is writing a story called "Lucy bakes a cake" and each week we follow a new chapter. Every chapter contains "blanks" for the participants to complete as well as instructions for other homework relating to the story, such as drawing the cake, and dancing around the kitchen. The participants send in their artwork and videos and it is shown to the group via Dropbox.

It has been absolutely wonderful to see their involvement and the expression of their imagination. All the VWPLUS-ers look forward to Wednesdays and their parents have been very positive about the content and quality of our Zoom sessions. Of course, we have no idea when we may be able to recommence rehearsals at the community hall, or when we will be able to perform in front of an audience but we are hopeful that restrictions will ease further over the coming months as risk of contamination in WA continues to remain low.

In the meantime, we would like to thank you for your involvement with VWPLUS and hope that you will continue to support us now and when we return to our usual venue in Shenton Park.

Mark your calendars for 20-26 June for an exciting opportunity to gather online with the family of Rotary for our first online convention.

Now More Than Ever, Rotary Connects the World: The 2020 Rotary Virtual Convention will join you with Rotary participants around the world during a time of unprecedented challenges.

Together, we’ll still experience the spirit of Rotary, be inspired by innovation, celebrate our resilience, and explore how clubs are addressing COVID-19. Experience Rotary in action during our Flag Ceremony, witness the power of connection during our general sessions, learn new ways to engage with Rotary during our breakout sessions, find inspiration from our global speakers, and much more.

We have never needed Rotary — and we have never needed each other — more than we do now. We hope to see you online, because Now More Than Ever, Rotary Connects the World.

“I would never have known, I had no symptoms”

Cancer Council WA is calling for more Western Australians to complete the free life-saving bowel screening test, with new figures showing only four in 10 eligible Australians are participating in Australia’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

Bowel cancer is Australia’s second biggest cancer killer. Many people don’t realise it kills more Australians each year than breast, prostate or skin cancer. When you receive the test don’t put it in the cupboard and forget about it - delaying can easily become ignoring, forgetting and ultimately not doing.

The test is quick, simple and you can complete it in the comfort of your own home.
Andrew McCann, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2017, said he owes his life to the test kit.

“When I first got a kit I nearly didn’t do it but my wife urged me to participate and I am so glad I did,” Mr McCann said.

“I needed to have a follow up colonoscopy and in 2017 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I would never have known, I had no symptoms at the time. The kit saved my life.”

Over 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated if caught in the early stages.
