The Rotary Club of
West Perth

Breakfast meeting update - Thursday 8 August 2019
One day a month, our committees get together and discuss Club projects and areas of focus for the current year. Thanks to all who attended and contributed at the meetings last week.

Stephen Lee, President elect lead us through the current status of the Strategic Planning process. The three priority groups have meet with some great activities for action identified.  Stephen and the group leaders will now work on collating all the information gathered into the next iteration of the draft plan. This will then go back to the Board for final approval and following this, implementation by our whole Club.

CONGRATULATIONS to Colin Arthur who celebrates his 10 year anniversary with the Club this year.

West Perth Rotary supports Life Education

Did you know that West Perth Rotary Club has been supporting the Life Education Program on a regular basis since 2006? Life Education WA is a community-based, independent organisation at the front line of positive and preventative drug and health education.

In recent times, two significant issues currently face young primary students - Cybersafety and Mental Health.  Life Education has been working with Primary schools over the past couple of years in addressing these issues, ensuring students receive the skills, and develop knowledge and resilience to help them cope in the real world.

During 2018/2019, as part of a collective District Grant with the Rotary Foundation, our Club contributed funds enabling the installation of 2 new 65" televisions in the Mobile Learning Centres. The funds also ensured one of the Mobile Learning Centres could upgrade their air conditioning units - essential in our WA climate of hot summer and cold winter days.

With progress and technology, the affectionately known TAM, (Transparent Anatomical Mannequin) has now gone digital (TAM-E) allowing educators to demonstrate healthy eating benefits on the body. TAM-E also shows student the negative effects of drugs, alcohol and smoking. The new tellies have been instrumental in the process, and the new delivery method has had a significantly positive impact on children’s learning given the visual and interactive capacity.

Organisations like Life Education rely on fundraising and donations to deliver their programs. We are proud to continue supporting their great work.

Did you know today is International Youth Day?

12 August was first designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999, and serves as an annual celebration of the role of young women and men as essential partners in change, and an opportunity to raise awareness of challenges and problems facing the world’s youth. In 2019 the theme is “Transforming education”.

This year’s theme highlights efforts to make education more inclusive and accessible for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves. International Youth Day 2019 will examine how Governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organisations, as well as other stakeholders, are transforming education so that it becomes a powerful tool to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Inclusive and accessible education is crucial to achieving sustainable development and can play a role in the prevention of conflict. Indeed, education is a ‘development multiplier’ as it plays a pivotal role in accelerating progress across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, be it poverty eradication, good health, gender equality, decent work and growth, reduced inequalities, action on climate or peaceful societies.

One thing we know about Rotary, is our commitment to a better future through developing our future leaders. Rotary programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service.

At West Perth Rotary Club for many years we have invested in youth initiatives. Our contributions to The All Abilities Play Space, the Life Education Program and the Hands On India Project are three youth programs supported in 2018/2019.

Today let's celebrate the world's youth and the contributions they make.

Do you have time on your hands to help with this educational program?

Delivered at the Claremont Showgrounds, districts coordinator Lindsey Francis is looking for volunteers to assist with the program.

This program has been adopted by the Rotary clubs in  Districts 9455 and 9465 in WA, to provide driver education to a secondary student, who is about to embark on obtaining a driver’s license. The program provides forthright information, to influence a student’s attitude towards and knowledge of road safety, before they become a young driver or are a passenger of a young driver.

Whilst informing a student that obtaining a driver’s license can be an empowering event, in terms of freedom of movement, the program aims to inform the student about the responsibilities associated with having that license and the consequences of any misuse of it. The program runs over one day for ideally about 180 students  from Year 10 or 11.

Volunteers will be asked to help set up and pack down, as well as to assist with helping the students on the day, making sure they get where they need to go.

If you are able to assist, please contact Lindsey Francis directly on 0412 771 476 or lindseyf@ozemail.com
