Guest Speaker

Our Guest Speaker this week was Mr Sath Moodley of U3A WA. Sath is a lawyer and spoke on the topic of "what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive". He gave us two examples from his professional experience involving fraud; in one case he represented the defence and in the other, the prosecution. The first case involved replacing the oedometer in a car that was subsequently sold for a relatively high price. The second case involved a tyres sales business, Bills of Exchange and altering documents to obtain a substantial benefit. Both the accused suffered significant financial loss as a consequence.

Sath Moodley was thanked on behalf of the Club by John Van Vliet

2 Minute Noodles
Please remember that 2 minute Noodles are meant to be 2 minutes, not 10 minutes, it is important for the flow of the meeting that they are no longer than 4 minutes maximum please.

Peter Blockley told us of "Operation Plowshare" which was the USA's program for the development of techniques for the use of nuclear explosives and large non-nuclear explosives for excavation purposes.  Its use was considered on expanding the Panama Canal, on developing a port in Alaska and to stimulate the production of natural gas. Peter also reported on his own experience working for a mining company in the Pilbara and the proposal to use 5 x 200 kilo-tonne nuclear explosions to create a port at Cape Keraudren. Daniel Ludwig and Lang Hancock were involved in the project but it did not proceed.
